How we met

Oct. 2, 2021

Picture it. Kansas City. Fall of 2021. Kelly, rather exasperated with men in general after yet another not-so-fun online dating experience, is chatting with her friend Abbie. Surely Abbie must know of a guy who's normal and decent, and around our age, Kelly says. As a matter of fact, Abbie does. She puts Kelly and Andy in the same text thread, and things take off from there. Both proudly proclaim that no swiping and no apps were needed to bring them together.

After the first date for coffee at the Broadway Cafe in Kansas City (where Kelly almost blows it by running late as usual, nearly running over Andy in the parking lot), the two quickly realize that what they'd found was, in fact, a little bit of a thing. Their lives were wonderfully rich and full before, but they were just about to discover how much richer and fuller life could be together, with someone to share all the good bits with.

And, man, were those good bits good. They enjoyed trips to the zoo, to baseball games (and, yes, Andy went to Busch Stadium and Kelly even went to Wrigley Field). Their adventures took them halfway around the world to England and Scotland, to walks in the park in their own backyard, to concerts and shows, to playoff games and everything in between.

The Proposal

Jan. 2, 2026

Andy, who's not known for his speed in much of any aspect of life, took his sweet time, but wanted to make sure he found the right moment. After buying a ring and sitting on it for some time, he eventually chose a New Year's trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, to propose. They stayed at a haunted hotel (Andy may or may not have been bopped in the head by a ghost) and were wrapping up a delightful trip.

Perched on the roof of the old hotel, while enjoying a delightful pizza, the two decided to walk around the grounds. Kelly pointed out a nice archway, and Andy asked a nearby couple if they'd mind snapping a happy photo.

While Kelly walked on ahead, Andy whispered to the couple that he was going to propose. "I'll take a video then," the man said, while the woman got so visibly excited that if Kelly had turned around, the jig would have surely been up.

She didn't turn around, though, and Andy got to one knee. And so it came to pass that with hardly anyone round except a makeshift videographer and his extremely happy companion and one pretty excited squirrel, Kelly said yes. And, in that moment for Andy and Kelly, their lives would change forever, and their joy seemed to fill the whole earth and all that's in it.
